Carnelian

Carnelian StoneCarnelian is a type of Chalcedony, a cryptocrystalline form of silica composed of fine inter-growths of quartz and moganite minerals. In the cavities of many rock forms, Carnelian develops from silica-rich soils, which solidifies at low temperatures. It forms in nodules, cone-shaped masses, or groups of stalactites that radiate outward from a central axis. India has some of the oldest Carnelian deposits, especially around Bengal, Deccan, and Ratnapur, India. This stone is often a solid reddish-brown color.

Carnelian Etymology

The name Carnelian comes from the Latin word “carnis” and translates to “flesh,” probably noted as one of the many shades of the stone. Another name for Carnelian was Cornelian, most likely derived from the Latin word “cornum,” meaning “cherry.”

Carnelian’s translucent color ranges from yellow-orange to reddish-brown to a deep red, and exposure to sunlight enhances its properties. Its crystalline structure is trigonal and anchors the wearer into the present reality. On the Mohrs scale, it measures between 6 and 7.

Metaphysical Used of Carnelian

Many sources report that Carnelian is a potent activator of the second Chakra, called the Sacral Chakra, which relates to a sense of Self, along with the five senses, creativity, reproduction, sexuality, and self-gratification. It restores vitality and motivation, stimulates creativity, and balances mental focus and creative inspiration.

It helps the insecure person to find strength within them so they can come into their own. In addition, it increases the appetite. This stone helps dispel anger and envy; banishes depression; repels negativity; and aids in rebirth, reincarnation, and past life recall.

Before Western Medicine, Carnelian was used to aid blood disorders, kidney stones, menstrual problems, arthritis, gall stones, asthma, allergies, and lower back pain. Astrological signs associated with this stone are Taurus, Aries, Cancer, and Leo, and Archangel Gabriel is associated with this crystal.
