Does the Reiki Method Reduce Stress?

Is Stress Affecting Your Health?

In my practice, most of my clients come to me with the same complaint:  too much stress, which manifests itself in physical, emotional and spiritual imbalances.  With only so many hours in the day, and so many things that have to get done, people are just feeling overwhelmed.  And with school just starting, many a mom, or dad, a student, or teacher has contacted me to receive a session to help reduce their stress.

What is Reiki

In case you don’t know what Reiki is, I’ll briefly explain it here.  Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a gentle Japanese healing art that was “re-discovered” in 1922.  It’s done by either placing the hands directly on the receiver, or holding the hands about one inch above them. It can also be done without having the person in the room.  It’s based on the idea that by tapping into God-consciousness energy (Universal energy), our bodies take that energy and use it for healing.  When you think about it, our bodies are amazing creations because they were designed to self-heal.  That’s certainly evident when you cut your finger, and within a couple of days, it’s healed.  Magic, right?  Not exactly, but pretty close.  It’s miraculous.

How the Body Reacts to Stress

The human body is designed to experience stress and react to it, which is a good thing.  That “flight-or- fright”  stress syndrome can keep us safe.  These are the  physical reactions that happen when you are stressed:

  • increased breathing and heart rate
  • tight muscles
  • increased levels of the  adrenaline and cortisol

When your body experiences these effects on a continual and regular basis, dis-eases like hypertension, depression, diabetes, a suppressed immune system, and adrenal fatigue occur.

How Reiki Reduces the Stress Response (Fight-or-Fright)

Having a Reiki Method session with a trained professional can indeed help reduce your stress.  Better yet, learning how to do the Reiki Method on yourself on a daily basis can really help calm your mind and body.  Because the Reiki Method helps to re-align your energy levels to homeostasis by  calming your mind first, you are able to balance the other areas of your body.  When we have restful thoughts, and allow ourselves to be aware of only the present moment, this gives our bodies the chance to heal.

In November 2011, the Denver ABC Channel 7 did a feature on Reiki and stress reduction, and how it can even help in pain management with Cancer patients.
