Crystals: Carnelian

Carnelian is a type of Chalcedony, which is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, composed of very fine inter-growths of the minerals quartz and moganite.  Occurring in the cavities of many forms of rock, Carnelian most often develops from the silica-rich soils which solidified at low temperatures.  It forms in nodules, cone-shaped masses or groups of stalactites which radiate outward from a central axis.  India has some of the oldest Carnelian deposits, especially around Bengal, Deccan and Ratnapur.  Indian Carnelian is most often a very strong reddish-brown color.  Carnelian also comes from South America.

The name Carnelian comes from the Latin word “carnis” and translates to “flesh,” probably noted as one of the many shades of the stone.  Another name for Carnelian was Cornelian, most likely derived from the Latin word “cornum” meaning “cherry”.  Carnelian’s translucent color ranges from yellow-orange to reddish-brown to a deep red, and is enhanced by exposure to the sun.   It’s crystalline structure is trigonal, and it has been used to anchor the wearer into the present reality.   On the Mohrs scale, it measures between 6 and 7.

Many sources report that Carnelian be a powerful activator to the second Chakra, called the Sacral Chakra, which relates to a sense of Self… along with the five senses, creativity, reproduction, sexuality and self-gratification. It may be used to restore vitality and motivation, stimulate creativity, and balance mental focus and creative inspiration. It helps the insecure person to find strength within them so they can come into their own. It is said to increase the appetite.    This stone may be used to help dispel rage, anger of envy; banish depression; repel negativity; and aids in rebirth, reincarnation and past life recall. Prior to Western Medicine, Carnelian was used to aid blood disorders, kidney stones, menstsural problems, arthritis, gall stones, asthma, allergies, and lower back pain.  Astrological signs associated with Carnelian are Taurus, Aries, Cancer, and Leo, and Archangel Gabriel is associated with this crystal.
